Cody Bridger

The cold wind blew through the forest, rippling through the trees and blades of grass. Summer was over and Autumn was quickly approaching. The leaves on the trees were already changing color, some had even fallen to the ground. The forest was changing, and those that were living in the forest were changing with it.

The cold wind blew in to a cave, ruffling the hair of the two occupants inside, both of whom were laying on the ground. The younger occupant, a five year old boy stirred but the older female occupant beside him did not.

Slowly Cody opened his eyes, coughed a little and sat up. What had happened? So much had happened in so little time. It was like a blur. His mom had taken him out to gather food; she was real big on eating healthy then...something happened. Cody raised a small hand to his neck and immediately moaned when he felt the bandage.

His neck hurt, it hurt a lot. Why did his neck hurt? Why did he feel so weak and yet so strange? His ocean blue eyes tracked to the left and stopped when they landed on his mother. Standing up, Cody shuffled over to Shana and shook her shoulder. “Mom...momma...” Normally Shana roused almost immediately but this time she didn't move at all.

Confused, Cody tried once again to rouse his mother. He shook her, poked her, tickled her under her ear (she always hated that) and still Shana didn't move. That was when five year old Cody noticed the blood on his mother's clothing. It was then that he noticed Shana's lips were blue and her skin was pasty white.

“Momma...come on...you have to wake up...” Cody whispered, his blue eyes filling with tears. “Momma...please! You promised you'd never leave me!” The five year old wiped at his eyes even as the tears began to fall. He knew that his mother would never answer him. He knew that she was gone and still he couldn't accept that. Slowly he grasped Shana's cold left hand which was lying limply at her side. “Momma...please...just open your eyes and tell me everything's gonna be okay. Smile at me like you always do...wrap your arms around me and hold me tight...please...momma? Please just open your eyes!”

Cody bowed his head and started sobbing in earnest. A lump had formed in his throat preventing him from speaking anymore. He sat there sobbing until the sun had set behind the treetops. It was a full moon that night.

The bright, white moon rose high in the sky, illuminating the forest with it's brilliance. In the cave, the moon beams had just shone through the semi open roof. Cody reacted to it immediately. He screamed in pain and fell on to his side. It felt like his insides were suddenly turning inside out and then being rolled over by a truck. He felt and heard a crack, almost as if someone had broken a bone. The pain became worse as his back was distorted, forcing him to scream once more.

What was happening to him? Was he dying? Would he soon see his mother? Shana had never told him anything about this. Once a month she would always disappear for a night but in the morning she would always be back with breakfast. She never explained where she went and Cody never asked. Cody screamed again, tears of pain were rolling down his face. He hurt so much that the pain in his neck was all but forgotten. He let go of his mother's hands and that was the first time he was able to get a look at his own. Black fur lined the tops of both of his hands and long claws were taking the place of his fingernails.

He could feel fur lining his body as well. Just what was going on? Suddenly his senses seemed to explode. He could smell things, all sorts of things that he hadn't been able to before. Hands went to his face and jerked back in surprise when he felt something cold and wet where his nose should be. This wasn't normal...it couldn't be normal!

It couldn't be...another loud scream irrupted from Cody's lips before he lay still. Everything became quiet again for a few minutes. Suddenly there was movement. A jet black lycan wolf shakily stood up on it's four paws. Black eyes roamed the cave before stopping on the dead body of a female. The wolf clumsily walked over and sniffed the body, getting blood on to it's snout. It sniffed a few more times before it sneezed and backed away.

The lycan was hungry but not for that. No it wanted something that was fresher than that. Turning, the lycan pup walked out of the cave, slowly gaining confidence and strength. Slowly it broke out in to a trot and then a full out run when it caught the scent of something living in the area. Saliva flowed, some dripping out of the pup's mouth. It was hungry, it needed to kill.
